New Patient Visit & Cleanings
Dr. Wood’s friendly, competent staff treat you like family
For some people, going to the dentist isn’t easy. That’s why from the moment you enter the office of Dr. Neil Woods, it’s our goal to make you feel at ease. You’ll find our office comfortable and our staff friendly. We’ll do everything possible to make you feel at ease.
Dr. Woods treats his patients as he would a family member. For Dr. Woods, “no question is a small question,” and he listens to your concerns as he suggests treatment solutions.
Our very thorough exam and consultation
Dr. Woods performs a very thorough oral exam which includes all the following:
Even before X-rays are taken, we will sit down and discuss your basic questions and objectives for coming in. We want to know what we have to do to meet or exceed your expectations. At all times during your exam and consultation, we’ll answer any questions you have.
We’ll also review your dental and medical history and as necessary consult your primary care physician concerning any health or medication issues, so your entire body’s health is taken into consideration prior to the start of any procedure.
Periodontal (gum) exam
Your gum health is as important as the health of your teeth. Dr. Woods will examine your gums to see if any gum disease is present and what periodontal care may be necessary.
Part of your $1 exam are two digital bitewing X-rays to assess your teeth for decay and how your teeth come together (your bite). Dr. Woods will go over your X-rays and explain what he finds.
TMJ and bite exam
You’ve probably heard of TMJ. It stands for the “Temporomandibular Joint.” This is the jaw joint. When this joint is misaligned, you can probably hear a popping or clicking noise, get severe headaches or feel like your bite isn’t as strong as it once was. With TMJ, you could encounter problems with your facial structure, or problems with chewing and/or grinding your teeth.
We will check your TMJ to determine whether adjustment is necessary, and we’ll also check your bite to ensure it has a good range of motion. Sometimes missing teeth can interfere with your bite, your ability to chew and can contribute to TMJ.
While every patient has a different reason for visiting our office, Dr. Woods wants you to have a healthy smile. Dr. Woods loves to restore confidence in his patients by giving them a good feeling about themselves through consistent oral care. He’ll evaluate your smile and discuss any changes you’d like to make about your smile, from broken or chipped teeth, missing, crooked teeth, discoloration or other dental flaws you’d like changed.
Oral cancer screening
As part of each new patient exam, we conduct an oral cancer screening. While it’s very unusual to actually find anything, our oral cancer screening can pinpoint a potential problem before it can develop into anything serious.

Gentle, thorough Cleanings
Our highly trained and experienced hygienist understands the necessity of helping our patients preserve their teeth. Using models for demonstration purposes, he goes over brushing, flossing and dental hygiene techniques to ensure long-term oral health.
According to most researchers, gum disease is the primary cause of adult tooth loss.
Getting your teeth cleaned—and learning how to keep them clean—is the first step in the prevention of gum disease. Cleaning and polishing also brightens your teeth.
Our hygienist’s cleanings are gentle yet thorough. One of the tools he uses is the ultrasonic scaler, for heavy stains and calcium deposits. Our ultrasonic scaler is also used when a patient has inflamed gums or is an orthodontic patient.
Gum disease treatment
If during your periodontic exam we detect gum disease, we provide high-tech laser gum disease treatment. Read about our Laser Gum Disease Treatment here.To make an appointment, call 410-647-1800 or click here to request an appointment online.
